Photoshop icons too small
At times designers may see their Photoshop icons too small and it’s often with designers working with computers for extremely long periods, eye strain can be a major problem. One problem that can lead to this is that the toolbar icons look too small. If so, don’t worry! On this page, we are going to teach you how to increase toolbar size easily.
Table of Contents
SUMMARY
Basically, you can enlarge the icons in the toolbar by going to the top of the screen and choosing File > Preferences > UI Scaling: 200%.
Before we jump straight into the article, if you want to learn more about the toolbar and other Photoshop workspace elements, check out our full Photoshop guide, which includes everything you need to know about the toolbar.
Photoshop icons too small
One of the reasons why the Photoshop icons too small is that your device may have an unusually high resolution. This can cause Photoshop icons for each tool very smaller than usual. Another factor that can affect toolbar size is your preferences.
Editing these settings allows you to change a wide variety of Photoshop features, allowing you to customize the appearance of the program, how it works, the functions of various tools, and much more. An appearance you can change here is the size of the toolbar icons.
How to Extend the Toolbar in Photoshop
- Open the preferences by clicking on the menu bar Edit > Preferences > Interface
To get started, let’s go to the Interface section of the Preferences window. This can be accessed by selecting Edit > Preferences > Interface from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
After doing this, you should notice that a new dialog box opens.
2. Set UI Scaling to 200%
Now that you have opened the relevant section of the preferences window, you can change the setting that determines the size of the icons on the toolbar. The UI Scaling setting affects the icon size in Photoshop. So, if your toolbar seems too small, you can increase this value to make the icons bigger.
Look closely at the dialog box, under this heading you should see an option labeled UI Scaling.
At this stage, click the arrow at the end of the drop-down list and select 200% from the displayed list accordingly.
When you are done, click the OK button in the upper right corner of the window to confirm the changes and close the box.
Then you’re practically done! All you have to do is restart the program to allow Photoshop to apply the changes you made. Make sure your work is saved before restarting the program. Otherwise, you may lose the session progress by closing the application.
The next time you reopen Photoshop, you’ll notice that the toolbar icons have increased in size!
Another method of solving Photoshop icons too small
On the desktop “Adobe Photoshop” shortcut:
- right click on the shortcut icon
- left click on Properties
- open the Compatibility tab
- In the Settings area on the compatibility tab, ensure the box beside the “Override high DPI scaling behaviour.” box is checked, and in the drop-down box directly below “Scaling performed By:”, set to System.
Doing the above WILL NOT CHANGE the way PS opens if you ask it to open via a right-click on the photo in question (that is, right-click on photo > Open With > Photoshop (Editor)).
You therefore also have to perform the above steps for the PhotoShop .EXE file. On my computer, this is located at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6 (64 Bit)
Locate the Photoshop.exe file, right-click on it and:
- left click on Properties
- open the Compatibility tab
- in the Settings area on the compatibility tab, ensure the box beside the “Override high DPI scaling behaviour.” box is checked, and in the drop-down box directly below “Scaling Performed By:” set to System.
